I didn't understand any of this. Except the last sentence.
Ambiguity is only your friend if you are a) trying to alienate/exclude people or b) actually wanting people to ask you lots of questions about your ambiguity so you can tell them what you're being ambiguous about, which defeats the purpose of ambiguity except that you now have an aura of "mystery" and "selectivity" (everyone hopes that they're the only one that you explain your ambiguity to).
So which is it?
(if there were a contest associated with leaving comments on your blog, which there clearly isn't, i would win points for being first to comment AND leaving the longest ramble of all times)
I think you are close with number 2 Beth.. Alasdair loves to create the aura of mystery about him :)
